AOSMark ranks Nokia Mobile as the 3rd best vendor in terms of updates - Nokiamob

  • 1 January 2019

If you’ve been following the tech space for a while, especially in terms of camera, you probably heard of DxOMark – a company that ranks phones according to their camera capability. Now, a similar site called AOSMark is ranking phones and phone vendors in terms of updates.

The service is new and not really 100% precise. As they explain on their faq page, they count only the updates where the API version changes, while minor updates and security updates aren’t counted. The score takes into account an update when it is released, but frequency of updates and availability isn’t taken into account, though in future it might. For more details check the FAQ page here.

HMD Global took the third spot after Google and OnePlus with a score of 1.82, which means that a Nokia device will receive on average 1.82 major updates during its lifetime. It can be interpreted as all phones besides the low end will receive two major updates, while the low end will receive one major update.

HMD’s result is good considering the number of phones they have. Next year the first generation of Nokia phones will turn 2 years old, so we are coming to the end of their “major update” lifecycle, while they should still keep on receiving security updates for a year, though AOSMark doesn’t count that. So, all Nokia phones are still pretty young and HMD has time to further improve that score with Android Oreo for Nokia 2, and Android Pie for Nokia 8 Sirocco, 5, 6, 5.1, 3, 3.1, 1, 2.1 and 3.1 Plus. They all will receive Pie, but there is no timeline when the update will hit a particular device.
